director 6a artillery sight

 

An inter World War artillery aimer's sighting device, a Director No 6a Mk III by Cooke Troughton and Simms of York.  Such instruments were used in the setting up of heavy artillery batteries and machine gun emplacements for determining the range and direction of fire.  This particular example is engraved "Director No 6A Mk III, Cooke Troughton & Simms Ltd, No 19" and is dated 1935.  It is complete with a correctly fitting - but later dated 1940 - high quality leather case.  The instrument is accompanied by a superb WW2 era tripod, retaining its original paintwork, dated 1942 and marked "Stand Inst No 17A MkII, Radio Ltd NZ, 1942 New Zealand".  When mounted on its tripod stand, the instrument measures 5ft (1.5m) high.  NOT FOR SALE.
