Louis gandolfi, london. whole plate camera

A fine antique whole plate camera by the legendary maker, Louis Gandolfi. Gandolfi founded his business in 1885 and operated from premises in Peckham Rye, London. He made large format cameras in very small numbers, never employing more than a handful of staff and typically making high quality cameras to order. This stunning example - most likely a variant of the company’s ‘Universal’ - measures 47cm x 31cm. It is finished in a beautiful Spanish mahogany and bears an Ivorine plaque on the lens board with the words “Gandolfi, Makers, London”. Gandolfi cameras are notoriously difficult to age since the designs changed little through the years. However, this is a design that was in production from the late 1890s. NOT FOR SALE
