quarter plate camera, r & j Beck, London

A finely-made antique quarter plate folding camera outfit by R & J Beck of London, dating to around 1905. Richard and Joseph Beck formed their company in 1843 and were a renowned firm of opticians making photographic lenses, microscopes, telescopes, military equipment and a small number of cameras. This particular example is beautifully made with lots of nice details including brass reinforcement and spirit levels to the top. Unusually, it is engraved to the reverse with the company name and serial number 289. To the front is a retailer’s plaque for the Westminster Photographic Exchange, which operated from 119 Victoria Street, London from 1903. The leather case also bears a label for the same company. The camera is complete with four plate holders, made to a similar high quality in mahogany with brass reinforcement. 28cm x 18cm, at maximum extension.
