Retractable Magic Lantern

 

An unusual late-Victorian, possibly 1880s, mahogany and brass magic lantern with retractable lens assembly which allows compact stowage. Maker's plate absent but possibly by Thornton Pickard. 56cm (extended) and 32cm high. 30cm long when stowed. Fitted with a 6" projection lens. A rare design.

Condition: Optics clear and undamaged. 6" projection lens a loose fit within its housing. Focusing adjustment operating smoothly and without slippage. Tinplate in good order, cowl and chimney repainted. Untested.
