Antique Edwardian Hand Carved Church Font, dated 1902

£1,600.00

A fine quality antique hand-carved baptismal font of octagonal form on a stepped base, dating to the late Victorian/early Edwardian era. The monogram IHS is beautifully and deeply carved into the front, the inscription having been taken from the Latin 'Iesus Hominum Salvator' which translates to 'Jesus Saviour of Mankind'. A copper insert is decoratively embossed with flowers around a central butterfly, bordered by the words 'Suffer Little Children to Come Unto Me'. A dedication plaque to the front reads 'To The Glory of God, in memory of Jessie Jardine and her daughters Jeanie and Mary, Jamieson, June 21st 1902'. The font was sourced in the Glasgow area of Scotland. 95cm high, 45cm across and approximately 100kg in weight.

Ideal as a focal point for a garden.

Condition: Generally excellent with minor edge chips and losses, notably to the base. Otherwise extremely solid and free from any notable damage. Brass plaque and copper insert both with oxidation, consistent with age. They could be polished to considerable effect, according to taste.

Shipping: Due to the history and irreplaceable nature of the item, collection would be preferred from the Penrith area, 10 miles from Junction 40 of the M6. If this causes difficulties, please use the contact form to request a delivery quotation. With regret, no overseas buyers on this item.
