French tabletop stereoscope with risque stereo slides, circa 1920

An antique tabletop stereoscope by Gaumont & Cie of Paris, dating to around 1920, together with a collection of seventeen somewhat risqué glass stereopositives dating to the same era. Metal construction with original crackled brown paint to the outside, internally fitted with a slide change mechanism that is operated by the circular handle to the side (rotate clockwise to bring a slide into view, and counterclockwise to advance the mechanism). The other control lever is for precise focusing adjustment. The instrument is complete with three Bakelite slide carriages, embossed ‘Stereoscope Classeur, SGDG, L Gaumont & Cie, Ingenieurs Constucteurs, Paris’ , each with capacity for 20 slides. 17 Slides included, each measuring 6cm x 13cm. The instrument stands 34cm high.

Condition: Instrument in used condition with age associated wear to the original paint finish. Mechanism working correctly. Optics good. Minor scuffs and scratches to the Bakelite components but with no chips, cracks or losses. Replacement ground glass screen. Missing makers plate to stand. Stereo slides mostly in good order, one with edge losses.
