An outstanding 10" x 12" Edwardian-era plate camera by one of the greatest of the London makers, Andrew Ross. This fine example survives in astonishing, almost as new, condition, despite being around 120 years old. Pictured in the first image alongside a camera in the more commonplace British Half Plate format (itself a sizeable camera), it can be seen that this camera is an absolute monster. It measures 78cm (30") at maximum extension and stands 40cm (16") high, and is exceptionally heavy. It comes complete with a desirable 14" Ross f7.7 Compound Homocentric Lens complete with lens cap and original case, two correctly fitting double dark slide holders consecutively numbered from 1 through to 4, a spare/unused lens board, and the original high quality felt-lined embossed and stitched leather case with makers label to the inside. Opportunities to buy cameras of this size and exceptional quality are few and far between.

Condition: This camera is in remarkable condition, most likely having been used on only a handful of occasions. The woodwork is simply beautiful, retaining wonderful colour and a deep shine, still protected by its original French Polish. There are just a couple of scuffs to the bottom of the baseplate. All of the brass components are simply outstanding, again still retaining their original protective lacquer, free from scuffs and scratches. The bellows are exceptional, fully light-tight and without edge wear. The lens optics are excellent, the iris functions correctly and the lens barrel is like new. Both plate holders are a correct fit and in excellent condition. The leather case is of high quality. It has a few scuffs and some age-related fading to the outside and some wear and losses to the felt lining. The strap is present, as is the makers label to the inside.
