Victorian Magic Lantern, Newton & Co of London

£0.00

A Victorian wood and brass magic lantern by one of the best of the London makers, Newton & Co. Wood and brass construction with a tinplate chimney. The makers plate to the front reads 'Newton & Co, Opticians to the Queen, 8 Fleet Street London'. It measures 58cm long and stands 38cm high and comes complete with wooden case.

Newton and Co was one of the earliest of the London scientific instrument makers, with its origins in the early 18th Century and family ties to the famous physicist and mathematician, Sir Isaac Newton.

Condition: Woodwork excellent, with original French Polish. The brass retains its original lacquer, albeit heavily aged/tarnished. The optics are good and the internal condensing lens present. The focusing control operates smoothly without slippage to the rack and pinion. Tinplate repainted. Lacking lamp holder/illuminant. Untested. Case with heavy wear including some deep scratches and minor losses. Handle missing.
