CHAPMAN HALF PLATE CAMERA

 

A late Victorian half plate folding camera, 'The British', made in the 1890s by Josiah Thomas Chapman of Manchester.   His company was founded in 1887 and was run through partnership with Joshua Billcliff.  The camera is beautifully made using fine quality mahogany with some nice detailing including dovetail joints, ebony binding, pronounced rounding to the edges and 'worm marking' to the brass.  The camera, including the bellows and f8 Beck symmetrical  lens are all in very good order.  Chapman's Ivorine maker's plate is present.  Camera length at maximum extension  43cm (16"), height 21cm (8").
