1920s Edison Bell Portable Wind-up Gramophone, playing Jessie Matthews 'Tinkle Tinkle Tinkle'
One of two nice old gramophones that I presently have available, this being an Edison Bell EB321 dating to the late 1920s. This example is finished in a brownish burgundy colour - rather than the ubiquitous black - and has a polished wooden motor board and bright chrome plated fittings. The sound box bears the company's distinctive bell-shaped emblem. Click here to SEE and HEAR it playing 'Tinkle Tinkle Tinkle' and 'Over my Shoulder' both by Jessie Matthews, the English dancer, actress and singer of the 1920s and 30s. Both songs were from the 1934 film 'Evergreen', and became big hits for Matthews, with 'Over my Shoulder' latter becoming her signature song and title of her autobiography and stage show.
The gramophone comes fitted with polished 'snake' tone arm, Edison Bell sound box, automatic brake, speed control, detachable cranked handle and container for storing needles - all housed within a Rexine-covered case. This gramophone is the kind of thing that would have been along to family picnics in the 1920s, along with a stack of shellac records - which seems almost inconceivable now that we are now able to stream music effortlessly from our mobile phones!
41cm x 30cm x 17cm (lid closed). Note that this gramophone is suitable only for playing shellac records, at 78rpm, and not for later vinyl records.
Condition: The chrome components are all in very good condition, with just a few marks and very minor tarnishing. The turntable is good, with a few marks to the original felt and some unevenness beneath, also some tarnishing to the outer rim. All controls are functioning correctly. There are minor marks to the motor board. The Rexine-covered case is mostly in good order with the exception of some minor edge losses. The front buckle, edge corners and leather bound handle all have some wear, the handle with its original leather covering but with some loss of stitching. The record is included in the sale. It has normal wear consistent with age and use, and comes with a nice period sleeve. As shown in the video clip, the gramophone plays very well and sounds fabulous, though because of its age is sold as seen and without warranty.
