1920s HMV 101 Picnic Gramophone playing Elsie Carlisle
One of two similar portable picnic gramophones that I presently have available, this charming HMV 101 dates to the mid to late 1920s and is shown here playing 'Tiggerty Boo' by one of the most prominent singers of the 1920s Britsh dance band era, Elsie Carlisle.
As can be seen in the video and photographs (Click Here to See and Hear it Play), this model was manufactured in a stylish black finish with contrasting chrome-plated components and a polished wooden deck. It comes with fast/slow adjustment, HMV's popular No 4 soundbox, a swing-out container for storing needles and a detachable cranked winding handle. Everything is housed within a smart black Rexine-covered case. As seen in the video clip it still plays very well, despite being around 100 years old.
It measures 41cm x 29cm x 14cm, with case closed. Note that this gramophone is suitable only for playing Shellac records, at 78rpm, and not for later vinyl records.
Condition: A lovely example - the chrome components are all in very good condition and the polished wooden soundboard is equally well-preserved, with just a few minor marks. Both the tone arm and soundbox are in very good condition, as can be seen in the photos and video clip. The turntable is excellent, still with original felt. All controls are functioning correctly. The black rexine-covered case is mostly in good order with minor scuffs and scratches and a couple of small holes to the uppermost surface. The original leather carrying handle is present and good order. The brass corner supports and steel catches all in good order, with just a little surface rust to the catch. The record is included in the sale and has minor wear consistent with age and use. It comes with a nice period sleeve, with some old taped repairs to the edges. As shown in the video clip, this gramophone plays very well indeed and has a wonderful nostalgic tone, though because of its age is sold as seen and without warranty.
