Antique Epidiascope, Mirrorscope, circa 1910

£90.00

An antique epidiascope or opaque projector, one of two similar instruments that I presently have available. The epidiascope was similar in function to a magic lantern but was intended for projecting images from a printed card rather than from a glass projection slide.

This unbranded model, likely dating to around 1910, is shown complete with a set of Primus projection post cards depicting the folktale 'Aladdin', as published by W Butcher and Sons of London in the late 1890s. These images were identical to those used on the company's successful Junior Lecture Series of glass magic lantern slides, but were printed onto card instead of glass and were printed in their mirror image specifically for use with an epidiascope or simple mirrorscope. Each card measures 8cm x 14cm, and the set is included within the sale.

This projector stands 29cm high and is 26cm in width.

Condition: This projector is in fair, original and unrestored antique condition, retaining its original black paint with some light/localised surface rust. The lenses are free from chips and cracks but would benefit from a strip down and clean, as would the internal mirrors. This epidiascope was found to be functioning well prior to the plug being removed for safety reasons. If intended for re-use the instrument will require rewiring by a competent electrician and properly earthing. The Primus projection cards are complete set, with some wear and losses.
