Antique Ships Lantern, Anchor Lamp, Murray McVinnie & Co, Glasgow

£415.00

An antique ships lamp, lantern, anchor light in copper and brass. This is one of a couple of old ship's lanterns that I presently have for sale, both from the same source and possibly the same vessel. This unusually large example measures an impressive 60cm, excluding the handle, and is 25cm in diameter. The brass applied plaque to the front is marked "Murray, McVinnie & Co, Mavis Bank, Glasgow" and there are other plaques marked 'Anchor' and 'Seagull Patent'.

The glass fresnel lens is etched 'C B & Co Ltd' for Chance Brothers Ltd of Smethwick, who were based in the West Midlands and became best known as a major engineering company supplying glass and other equipment for lighthouses around the world.

Murray, McVinnie and Company Limited were wholesale ship chandlers and exporters, incorporated in 1907, and operating from Mavisbank Quay in the heart of Glasgow's Clydesbank ship building district.

Condition: The polished copper is in good condition with some pitting, tarnishing and minor indentations consistent with age and use. The brass applied plaques show some wear from repeated polishing. The glass fresnell lens is in generally in good condition with half a dozen small chips, as apparent in the images. The internal oil burner is possibly non-original and has not been tested. It's in good order but will no doubt require a replacement wick and glass chimney if it is to be used.
