Antique Surveyors Level, Charles Baker of London, 1920s
An antique theodolite or surveyors level from the workshops of Charles Baker of 244 High Holborn, London. Baker was a prominent maker of high quality optical and scientific instruments, including theodolites, levels, microscopes and telescopes. Whilst the history of the company can be traced back to the 18th Century, this particular instrument likely dates to around 1920. Of all-brass construction, it retains its original blackened finish - designed to reduce glare - and is nicely engraved to one side "Baker, 244 High Holborn, London". It is presented within its original fitted wooden case, this in turn contained within a nicely patinated leather outer. The instrument stands 20cm (8") high and is 33cm (13") long.
Condition: The instrument survives in very good, original and unrestored condition - the brasswork retaining its original finish with only light scratches and oxidation. The optics are very good, free from chips, cracks, haze etc and deliver a strong, crisp image. The focusing control operates correctly. Both spirit levels are in good condition. The glare shield is present, missing one screw from its swing out cover. The fitted wooden case is in good condition with light surface scratches, particularly to the top. The protective leather case has beautiful colour and shine but has numerous losses to the stitching and straps, as shown in the images.
