Antique Zograscope, Graphoscope, Perspective View Mirror Machine, rare, 1800s

£785.00

A rare antique zograscope, perspective mirror or optical diagonal machine, likely dating to the mid-1800s. These instruments were popularised in the 18th Century and used a lens and angled mirror to allow users to view prints, notably architectural perspective views or 'vues d'optique', with an enhanced perception of three dimensions. Zograscopes once provided a popular form of parlour entertainment for the rich and well-to-do.

This beautiful example has been hand-made from beautifully figured and close-grained hardwood, with inlaid stringing detail to the frames housing the lens and mirror. The diagonal mirror may be secured using twin thumbscrews to left and right, with the lens housing being hinged for ease of adjustment to suit the individual viewing preference of the user.

Adjustable, up to 75cm tall. Lens 12cm diameter, mirror 16cm x 20cm.

Condition: The instrument survives in fine condition. The lens is free from cracks, scratches and losses and has only minor surface marks. The original mirror has minor foxing and a small crack to the upper left, as pictured (last image), not noticeable when the instrument is in use. If desired it could be easily replaced. The woodwork is excellent, still protected by its original French Polish and with nice colour and shine. The upper joints show very slight movement, as is normal. The wooden locking thumbscrew for adjusting the height operates correctly, and the unit stands very solidly.
