Fox or Buck Hounds, 1913-14, Stereoscopic Glass Slides
Verascope, Jules Richard, Taxiphote format (45mm x 108mm); a collection of glass stereoscopic images depicting fox (or possibly buck) hunting in 1913 and 1914. This is a collection of 10 glass slides which - when viewed through a suitable stereoscope - give an incredible illusion of three dimensions. All slides are hand-annotated in French, and possibly relate to a French family's holiday to Tottenham House in the Savernake Forest, Wiltshire, having come from a wider collection of glass slides that I have been selling recently. Most slides are hand-annotated 'Chasse a Courx 1913', which translates to 'Chasing with Hounds'. One is marked '8 Walks' referring to the striking meeting point of eight forest drives on the Savernake Estate. The rather fine image of a lady on her house is annotated 'Miss Elliot 1913'.
For those unfamiliar with stereoscopy, the technique was popularised in Victorian times and deployed two near identical images taken from slightly differing viewpoints. When viewed through a stereoscope, the brain was 'fooled' into seeing a single three-dimensional image with tremendous depth of field.
Condition: All in excellent condition, well composed and correctly exposed, free from chips, cracks and losses.
