HMV 102 picnic gramophone, supplied by Harrods, 1930s era - SEE & HEAR it PLAY!

£200.00

This nice 1930s era HMV 102 portable gramophone is just he kind of thing that would have been taken along to family picnics in its day, though admittedly it's not very portable by today's standards!  This particular example was retailed by one of Europe's leading department stores of the time. Harrods of London.  Presented in excellent condition and in full working order, here it is shown playing "Twentieth Century Blues" as written by Noel Coward and performed here by the New Mayfair Novelty Orchestra. Click here to see and hear it play.  The song was first sung in the 1931 stage play Cavalcade. It was written to express the confusion and disappointment people felt after the First World War, while also showing the hope and patriotism of that time.

As can be seen in the photographs, this model was manufactured in a stylish black finish with contrasting chrome-plated components and a polished wooden deck, fast/slow adjustment, automatic start and brake mechanism, a container for storing needles and detachable winding handle, all housed within a smart black Rexine-covered case. Still playing well, with considerable volume and surprisingly good sound quality, it measures 42cm x 29cm x 15cm (with case closed). The 102 was noted for its quality. Note that it is suitable only for playing Shellac records, at 78rpm, and not for later vinyl records.

Condition: All chrome components are in good condition, with just a few marks and tarnishing. Both the tone arm and soundbox are in very good condition, again with minor tarnishing. The turntable is very good, with original felt.  There  are a few scratches to the motor board, as illustrated. All controls are functioning correctly, including the automatic brake. The black rexine-covered case is in very good order with just a few scuffs. The handle to the case is in good order, with original leather covering. The winding handle has some surface rust. record shows minor wear consistent with age and use, and comes with a nice period sleeve.  As shown in the video clip, this gramophone plays very well indeed, though is sold without warranty.
